24 New Mulberry Trees Planted

December sees us planting again. Mulberries have been popular for our pick your guests as well as friends at the Athens Farmers Market and Freedom Farmers Market in Atlanta. With help from Robert & Martha we decided to plant another 24 mulberry trees ordered from One Green World in Oregon. The plants arrived in August, well packaged in a robust cardboard box and tiny pots. Robert advised us to transplant into 3gal pots with roughly 50/50 fine pine bark to play sand. We watered them in with rain water that we harvested in addition to some biological innoculants, fish emulsion and molasses. They grew quite well and by planting date in December the little mulberry trees had developed quite a robust root system. After digging a hole 3x the diameter of the 3gal pot, we made a little mound, staked the tree on top of the mound and spread the roots out. Then we covered the roots in an inch deep of worm castings (also known as vermicompost) and back filled the hole. These little mulberry trees actually developed fruit in October. We look forward to more mulberries to pick in June 2020.
